Course Overview:

Sports Therapy is the skilled application of a wide range of therapeutic techniques for the prevention, recognition, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries and to also help support clients to maintain and improve fitness levels. These techniques are selected and performed after careful consultation, recording of medical history and appropriate general and specific assessment. Our Diploma in Sports Therapy course will provide you with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and personal confidence that you need to start an exciting and rewarding career as a professional Sports Therapist. The course is suitable for entry level students and for sports massage therapists who are looking to further develop their skills.

Our Diploma in Sports Therapy course is a comprehensive training programme that has been designed by Chartered Physiotherapists who have specialised in the field of sport and run a professional sports clinic for over twenty five years. We offer students the opportunity to learn unique treatment and rehabilitation formulae that have been developed over many years of client clinical pathway analysis and which are proven in their effectiveness. The course has a clear focus on what is needed to be successful in the workplace. It covers core National Occupational Standards and the sports therapy core curriculum of the Sports and Remedial Therapy Council (SRTC), the governing body for sports and remedial therapy.

We also provide our students with a unique opportunity to visit and participate in practical workshop sessions delivered by the staff at the University of Bath Sports Department. These world class facilities were used by Olympic athletes in the run up to the 2012 games and are made available to give you a fantastic insight into the support given to elite level athletes.

Course Format:

We have developed a flexible format for our Diploma in Sports Therapy course which allows students to study around any existing commitments they may have. The course is part-time and includes home study, intensive practical workshops and client case studies all of which are supported on a personal basis and in a professional manner by our experienced tutors.

Home Study
The home study element of the course has been designed to give students a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge. Using a wide range of resources and study methods, including interactive online learning and home study workbooks, you will build up a detailed portfolio of work to provide evidence of study and to use as an excellent source of information for future reference. During the modules a designated tutor is appointed to each of our students to provide them with feedback on assessed work and other general guidance.

Practical Workshops
The objective of the practical workshops is for students to learn, practice and build confidence in their practical skills. With this in mind, particular emphasis is placed on encouraging active participation during the practical workshops. Training in small groups (maximum of six people) students gain the essential hands-on clinical experience that leads to professional competency and effective performance. The facilities of our Sports Clinic are made available for you to participate in supervised sessions that involve client consultation, treatment and rehabilitation. Tutors work closely with you on an individual basis to ensure that you are achieving the practical skill levels required.

Case Studies
Following the practical workshops students are required to compile a set number of client case studies. The principle of the case studies is for students to develop their experience in a controlled and supported way. On completion, a tutor will review your case studies with you, giving you the opportunity to discuss your progress and to gain invaluable clinical advice.

Written, oral and practical assessments are carried out on an ongoing basis during the course.

Course Structure:

The course is structured in two parts, both of which can be studied independently if required. The full course programme is of 14-15 months duration; although this may be shortened depending on the time you have available to study. If Parts One and Two are studied independently the duration will be 8-9 months for each.

To gain our Diploma in Sports Therapy, entry level students will need to complete Parts One and Two of the course. Practicing Sports Massage Therapists can study on a fast track programme which requires them to complete Part Two only.
