To train students in the techniques of Sports Massage in a variety of environments. The course covers:

  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Professional Standards & Legal Requirements for Clinical Practice
  • Client Consultation
  • Contra-indications (conditions unsuitable for treatment)
  • Postural analysis
  • Recognising posture deformities
  • Joint & muscle function in physical activity
  • Basic body massage methods and applications
  • Sports Massage Methods and Applications
  • Pre, during & Post Event Massage
  • Remedial therapy for conditions of foot, ankle, knee, leg, torso, neck, hand, elbow & shoulder
  • Sports massage for musculo-skeletal injuries
  • Cryotherapy (ice treatment) / Thermal Therapy (heat treatment)
  • Stretching, strengthening, mobility & co-ordination
  • Assessment and Treatment of Sports Injuries & Conditions
  • How to approach treatments / protocols / treatment reviews
  • Supervised consultations with real patients and treatment sessions using the facilities of our fully equipped working clinic
  • First Aid

Who should take this course?

Anyone looking for an entry level course that will enable them to provide a safe and effective sports massage to professional standards both in the field and in a clinical environment.

Successful candidates can become a Level 3 member of the Sports Massage Association and will be able to obtain liability insurance enabling them to work as a Sports Massage Therapist.

Qualifications gained on completion:

Sports Massage Diploma (Level 3)

Anatomy & Physiology Diploma (Level 3)

Health, Safety, Security & Employment Standards Diploma (Level 3)

Emergency First Aid Certificate

Course Structure:

Interactive online study, 2 home study modules and text book and tutorial support, followed by 5 full days of practical workshops at our well equipped teaching rooms and professional sports clinic. Written, oral and practical assessments are carried out on an ongoing basis during the course allowing tutors to provide you with continual feedback.

The recommended learning hours for this course is 490 hours.

Following the practical workshops students are required to complete 40 hours of sports massage client case studies. Our tutors review your case studies and provide feedback enabling you to discuss your progress, raise any questions and gain invaluable clinical advice.

Advanced Diploma in Sports Massage

Course Syllabus:

A range of advanced skills and massage techniques to prevent and manage injury in sport and active leisure. The course covers:

  • Advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological principles
  • Advanced palpation skills
  • Advanced postural analysis
  • Advanced range of movement analysis
  • Physiological, neurological and psychological effects of massage methods
  • Clinical and ethical procedures
  • Massage strategies
  • Contraindications and allergic reactions
  • Critical evaluation of massage strategies and methods for impact on future treatments
  • Practical anatomy and physiology for sports massage
  • Applying massage methods to prevent and manage injury
  • Assessing range of movement of spine
  • Measuring joint range of movement of upper and lower limbs
  • Analysing symmetry of posture
  • Subjective and objective assessments of clients
  • Advanced massage techniques
  • Injury management and prevention
  • Dealing with clients in a professional and competent manner
  • Using feedback from clients to provide advice for future treatments

Who should take this course?

Competent practitioners looking to further their understanding of advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological principles relevant to the application of sports massage and who are looking to learn advanced palpation and massage techniques to prevent and manage sports injuries.

Successful candidates can become a Level 4 member of the Sports Massage Association (‘SMA’). The SMA is seeking approval for recognition from the Olympic committee which would allow successful candidates to work with Olympic athletes before and during the Olympics. This qualification is also recognised as an approved qualification for CPD by the Sports Massage Association.

Entry Requirements:

VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy or alternatively VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Anatomy & Physiology with either the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Swedish Massage or the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Body Massage. Candidates must also hold an HSE recognised Emergency First Aid Certificate.

If you do not hold one of the qualifications listed above or its equivalent, we can provide training in order for you to progress to this advanced course.

Entry level students may study for the Level 3 Sports Massage Diploma and carry straight on to the Level 4 Advanced Diploma training course. Students booking both courses at the same time will receive a 5% discount off both courses.

Sports Massage Therapy Certificate (Level 4)

Course Structure:

Home study modules with text books and tutorial support, followed by 6 full days of practical workshops at our well equipped teaching rooms and professional sports clinic. Written, oral and practical assessments are carried out on an ongoing basis during the course allowing tutors to provide you with continual feedback.

How long will it take?

The recommended learning hours for this course is 120 hours.

Following the practical workshops students are required to complete 50 hours of sports massage client case studies in a working sports environment. Our tutors review your case studies and provide feedback enabling you to discuss your progress, raise any questions and gain invaluable clinical advice.
